Machine Features
Over-the-air controller reprogramming
In order to utilize over-the-air controller reprogramming, software update 18-1 needs to download in the background:
- Need 17-2 to download 18-1 in background
- Download in background is only for the Gen 4 operating system
- Controllers download and install in the foreground
Once software update 18-1 is installed, users are able to reprogram precision farming controllers (AMS controllers) over the air:
- GreenStar™ Rate Controller (liquid)
- StarFire™ 3000 Receiver
- StarFire 6000 Receiver
- AutoTrac™ Universal 200 steering system
- Application Controller 1100
- iGrade™ system
- Active Implement Guidance
- Distance Trip
- Over-the-air activations
Precision farming Ethernet reprogramming
- The Gen 4 display can perform other-the-air or USB reprogramming of the StarFire 6000 Integrated Receiver over Ethernet.
- This reduces StarFire 6000 Integrated Receiver reprogramming times from about 30-45 minutes to about 5-10 minutes.
What is over-the-air reprogramming of precision farming devices
Precision farming devices are attachable components (such as the StarFire 6000 Receiver, GreenStar Rate Controller, and AutoTrac Universal steering system) that complete or extend a producer’s precision farming solutions.
Producers have the power to reprogram every* AMS component connected to their vehicle, over the air, without the need for a USB stick or separate download program:
- No more need for a USB stick
- No more need for a Mac® or PC laptop
- No more need for GreenStar Live Update
- No more need for the MyJohnDeere™ portal Software Manager
- No more need to remember to bring all of this hardware, nor to remember how to use all of these different tools
Over-the-air reprogramming allows for fast, simple, and convenient updates that offer improved performance and new features when producer’s need them, when they want them, and when they are ready for them.
*NOTE: Other AMS displays (such as the Original GreenStar Display, GreenStar 2 1800, GreenStar 2 2600, and GreenStar 3 2630) cannot be reprogrammed by the Gen 4 display. Modular Telematics Gateway and non-AMS components, such as the tractor radio, are not updateable by the Gen 4 display.
How it works
Ensure the Gen 4 display is connected to one of the following:
- A 4640 Universal Display with an active Wi-Fi connection
- An MTG connected to an active Wi-Fi connection
- An MTG in good cellular coverage
- NOTE: An active JDLink™ subscription is required to use the MTG cellular connection.
The Gen 4 display’s internet connection status can be review from Status Center or the Wireless Settings application.
Ensure the Gen 4 display is connected to the precision farming device that is to be reprogrammed. The Gen 4 display’s connection status to the precision farming device can be reviewed by looking for the device in the ISOBUS VT application or in the Diagnostics Center application.
- From the Gen 4 display, open Software Manager:
- Menu > System tab > Software Manager
- Check for updates online > for other devices
- Review available updates
- Select the update that should be pushed to the precision farming device.
- Click install.
- Keep the key switch in the ON or ACCESSORY position during reprogramming.
- An active internet connection is required during the first pinwheel; users can move into more remote areas after the download pinwheel completes.

Generation 4 Display compatibility
This is the compatible equipment approved with the software update 2018-2 release, and is subject to change with newer software updates. To ensure complete and proper compatibility, the most current version of implement control unit software, Gen 4 Display software, or compatible farm management information software (FMIS) should be used. Non-current software versions will require an update before support can be provided. Unapproved software version configurations will not be supported.
Gen 4 Displays are compatible with one Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) certified ISOBUS implement; AEF-certified ISOBUS implements with Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC) functionality and AEF certification for TC-SC include sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, planters, seeders, manure applicators, etc. For third-party FMIS compatibility, reference the John Deere Operations Center.
CommandCenter Premium 3.0 activation is compatible with the 4600 CommandCenter v2 processor. The 4640 Premium 3.0 subscription is compatible with the following 4640 Universal Display configurations. The following configurations are available for use with software update 18-1 on the 4600 CommandCenter v2 processor and the 4640 Universal Display. The 4600 CommandCenter v1 processor and 4100 CommandCenter are updatable to software update 17-2. The chart below lists compatible configurations. Verification of server version must be done via serial number tag or display user interface.
Server serial numbers are as follows:
- v1 = RWG prefix
- v2 = PCG prefix

Enable tractor-implement communication through AEF ISOBUS TC-SC compatibility
The Generation 4 CommandCenter™ and Gen 4 Universal Displays display are an AEF ISOBUS compatible display.
An easy plug and play between implements, displays, tractors, and other products is required today in daily business. This is why within agriculture and forestry, an industry standard, ISOBUS, is used for communication between these products.

From the ag industry, the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) was initiated in 2008 to have a common forum among manufacturers to define the ISOBUS standard further, define and conduct ISOBUS tests, accelerate adoption, label compatible products, and to communicate this to dealers and customers. John Deere is one of the seven founding members of AEF and is very engaged in the organization.
To better ensure ISOBUS compatibility, the AEF developed new functionalities, i.e., auxiliaries (AUX) and Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC,) in addition to the well-known universal terminal (UT). They are also the basis for the certification of ISOBUS products. An ISOBUS functionality can be described as an independent ISOBUS product and the concept is extendable for later additions of functionalities.
Gen 4 CommandCenter and Gen 4 Universal Displays support the following ISOBUS features:
- 4600/4200 CommandCenter and 4640/4240 Universal Display:
- Universal Terminal (UT)
-> ISOBUS sprayer, seeder, planter, fertilizer spreader, manure applicator, and many other implements can be operated through the UT functionality. - Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC)
-> With TC-SC, ISOBUS compliant implements like sprayers, seeders, planters, fertilizer spreaders, and manure tankers can be used with automatic Section Control. - Task Controller Basic (TC-Bas)
-> With TC-Bas, documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, totals like area, amount, etc. are recorded directly from the implement. - Task Controller geo-based (TC-Geo)
-> With TC-Geo, location-based documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, Client, Farm, Field, Boundary, Products, Crops (incl. Varieties), Prescriptions, Operators, Tasks, Comments are recorded directly from the implement. - Auxiliary Control (AUX-N)
-> With AUX-N, additional control elements that facilitate the operation of complex equipment, such as a joystick; also, the capability of controlling implement functions by means of an additional control element.
- Universal Terminal (UT)

Wirelessly transfer data
John Deere Wireless Data Transfer (WDT) helps producers save time, money, and increase productivity through telematics-enabled data transfer via JDLink™ Connect wireless telematics. Wirelessly transfer setup, prescription, and documentation files securely between office, mobile devices, and 4640/4240 Universal Display or 4600/4200 CommandCenter™ Display, eliminating the need for USB transfer. This increases producer uptime and productivity, reducing the risk of data loss, and enabling easy data sharing and more timely decision making.
Through the John Deere Operations Center, producers are in control and can easily share files with a John Deere dealer and other trusted advisers.
Wireless Data Transfer
With WDT, producers can manually send data wirelessly to the John Deere Operations Center; data is available to review in Files and then later in Field Analyzer and the MyOperations™ mobile app. To enable WDT on a Gen 4 Display, producers must manually navigate to the Menu, System, File Manager, Export and then begin selecting the data they want to send to the John Deere Operations Center.
NOTE: WDT on a Gen 4 Display does not include any auto send triggers similar to the GreenStar™ 3 2630 Display which automatically sent data after a change in client, farm or field.
Set-up files and prescriptions can be transferred wirelessly from the Operations Center to the 4600/4200 CommandCenter or 4640/4240 Universal Display anytime, eliminating trips to the machines’ locations and allowing for more timely completion of field operations. Modified setup files and prescriptions will not overwrite files currently on the Gen 4 Display; only new or modified information will be imported from the setup file.
Requirements for WDT
- An active JDLink Connect subscription on a Modular Telematics Gateway (MTG)
- Organization set up in the John Deere Operations Center
Data Sync
Data Sync automatically sends documentation data to John Deere Operations Center every 30 seconds. Producers have the opportunity to analyze data from completed fields or view where field work is in process, making it easier for producers to make operational decisions. Data is available to analyze from any internet-connected device to make important production decisions and give operations the ability to invoice work recently completed. There are triggers that make the data available within the John Deere Operations Center including: after a field has been completed, after new work has started, or a half hour after field work has been stopped.
Requirements for Data Sync
- An active JDLink Connect subscription on an MTG
- Gen 4 CommandCenter Premium or Automation activation; 4640 Premium or 4640 Automation subscription; 4200 CommandCenter Data Sync and Section Control activation; or 4240 Data Sync and Section Control subscription
- Organization set up in the John Deere Operations Center
Remote Display Access (RDA)
The ability to remotely view the machine’s settings, performance, yield, acres, and other information is highly valuable when managing or supervising an operation. It is imperative that the operator’s equipment keeps running productively and that the producer or dealer is enabled to provide remote support to improve the quality and efficiency of work while saving time and money. RDA enables an operator to get help with machine settings or identify a problem and receive assistance in navigating through the steps needed to resolve the issue.

Dual display
John Deere 4640 Universal Display may be configured to run with GS3 and Gen 4 CommandCenter™ displays on machines approved in the machine compatibility section.
All precision ag activations purchased on the 4640 Universal Display are defaulted to run on the cornerpost display while in dual-display mode. Activations cannot be shared between the 4640 Display and the Generation 4 CommandCenter. The second display must have its own activations to run AMS applications. RDA can be used on either the 4640 Display or Generation 4 CommandCenter in the same session.
Precision ag applications, such as AutoTrac assisted steering system, documentation, and Section Control cannot run on both displays at the same time. When a cornerpost display is installed, precision ag applications will default to the cornerpost display. For full dual-display compatibility, reference the configuration table.
NOTE: SeedStar™ 4HP software will require the latest mid-year software update for use in dual-display mode with a 4640 Universal Display and Gen 4 CommandCenter Display in the spring of 2018. Please refer to SeedStar 4HP software updates to provide the latest compatibility with this configuration as current software does not support it.
